There is a lot you can do to take control of your mental health and the mental health of your family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. Most importantly, you should look for the early signs of deteriorating mental health and, when you notice those signs, you should take action, including seeking help.
Look for Early Signs
The signs you can look for in yourself and in others are:
- Withdrawing from people or activities that are normally enjoyable
- Sleeping or eating too much or too little
- Feeling as if nothing matters
- Consistently low energy
- Using drugs more than normal (including alcohol and nicotine)
- Displaying uncharacteristic emotions
- Not being able to complete daily tasks, such as getting to work or cooking a meal
- Persistent thoughts or memories that reappear regularly
- Thinking of harming one’s self or others
- Hearing voices
It may be possible for you to make changes to help yourself or encourage those you are supporting to do so. For example, you can make lifestyle changes such as reducing alcohol intake, increasing exercise, improving sleep and eating well.
For many people, it is important to seek help and Seek Sense can provide you with guidance to improve your own mental health and the mental health of your loved ones.
Treatments for improving mental health typically include either psychotherapy or medication and sometimes a combination of the two.
Psychotherapy (talking therapies) – These are non-medical approaches to treating mental illness. Examples include Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT), Exposure therapy, Dialectical Behaviour therapy and Psychodynamic therapies.
Medication – although medication does not cure mental disorders, some medications can improve symptoms.
It is important to know that what works for one person may not work for another and that is why all advice, guidance and treatment suggested by Seek Sense is tailored to each individual’s needs.
If you or a loved one is experiencing difficulty, you can request a free consultation with Seek Sense using our online booking system.
